But some concerns turn into fears. And occasionally fears grow into phobias. Here's a list of phobias that might be found wherever students congregate. Ablutophobia Fear of washing or bathing Agoraphobia Fear of open, crowded places Aulophobia Fear of flutes Bibliophobia Fear of books Caligynephobia Fear of beautiful women Cantagelophobia Fear of being ridiculed Didaskaleinophobia Fear of school Ecclesiophobia Fear of church Eremophobia Fear of loneliness Ergophobia Fear of work Glossophobia Fear of speaking in public Gnosiophobia Fear of knowledge Lyssophobia Fear of becoming insane Neophobia Fear of anything new Ophthalmophobia Fear of being stared at Osmophobia Fear of smells Pantophobia Fear of everything Papyrophobia Fear of paper Phronemophobia Fear of thinking Scholionophobia Fear of school Don't worry if you haven't heard of many of these phobias. You won't find a lot of these specialized problems in most dictionaries, and when you do, they may have variant spellings. Besides, we don't want you developing phobophobia (fear of phobias). The point is that most of us have certain fears and trepidations, some of which can become quite strong. The Bible has a lot to say about fear. Most of the passages encourage us NOT to be afraid. Almost every time an angel arrived on the scene, he had to start his proclamation with, "Don't be afraid!" Jesus also acknowledges the presence of fear in our lives. His advice is to be careful what we allow to scare us. He taught, "Dear friends, don't be afraid of those who want to kill you. They can only kill the body; they cannot do any more to you. But I'll tell you whom to fear. Fear God, who has the power to kill people and then throw them into hell" (Luke 12:4-5). "Fear of the Lord" is a theme that permeates the Bible, in both the Old and New Testaments. Thanks to the sacrifice of Jesus at the cross and the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, we don't often LITERALLY quake with fear when we sense the presence of God. And believers need not fear being thrown into hell. Yet we should never forget that if we were to get the briefest glimpse of God in his glory and power, the strongest and bravest of us would be floored with fear. We are spared the obligation of quivering every time we approach God, yet we should VOLUNTARILY treat him with the greatest of respect and reverence. That's what is meant by "fearing" God. We don't try to avoid him as we might attempt to dodge the objects of our phobias. Rather, we acknowledge that he is the ultimate authority in our universe and give him the awe-filled worship that he deserves. So as you see the signs of Halloween this week--ghosts, witches, haunted houses, monsters, and such--think about what frightens you. And what doesn't. On your own ... Use a Bible concordance to do a word study on "fear." You probably won't have time to find all the references listed, but look up enough of them to let God's Word help you avoid useless fears and develop an appropriate "fear of the Lord" that will strengthen your relationship with God. _________________________________________ Thought For The Day: "Our faith should be our steering wheel, not our spare tire." --C.L.
